Mid/late 19th century needlepoint - c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one in which a young woman is seated within a garden setting with a basket plus blanket on the ground to her left and another basket to her right. This basket has a hen standing in it who is looking up at the young woman who is cupping something in her hands. Although we are unable to see what she is ho...lding, I think it is safe to assume it is the hen's chick. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges, particularly the right side one, presumably from where the needlepoint with has been folded and tacked over a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. The colours of the wool are good, albeit not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some minor fraying.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 19 3/4" x 22 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
