Small early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler initialled WD/TD etc. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly earlier. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns followed by three rows of sets of family initials which have a row of five small motifs at the end of the last row. The lower se...ction of the linen is stitched from left to right with a red lion, floral urn, floral motif and fruit basket with (again from left to right) a squirrel, bird and flower above plus a set of family initials over the fruit basket. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. Measures 7 1/4" x 11" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
