Original Description:
Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Gough - 1838. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of five trees which have an urn and cherub to each side and two rows of alphabet letters beneath, each underlined with a narrow border pattern. There is a central row of numbers below which have a fruit basket and floral motif to their left and right. The middle section of the li...nen is stitched with a central floral urn with a smaller urn beneath which has a small black bird to each side whilst the larger urn has a large plump bird standing on either side. The large bird to the left has a rose, bird, blossom branch and stag to his left whilst the one on the right has a rose, tree, two small birds and recumbent deer at  his side. The following short verse is stitched beneath the two small black birds with a floral motif and two flower baskets to its left and right
In thy care book of life divineMy God inscribe my name There let me fill some humble placeBeneath the heavenly lamb
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central seated figure, crook in hand with a floral motif to each side and their dog standing at their feet, whilst directly below a shepherd and his wife tend their flock with the help of their dogs. There is a tree and fruit tree to the side of each figure with two crowns below the fruit tree and two dogs standing between the trees. Mary's name and the date of May 1838 are contained with in a central plaque on the bottom edge of the linen with a dog, carnation, and trees to each side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow meandering foliate border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with several areas of damage, the largest being in the lower left quadrant. The damage in the verse has resulted in a small amount of stitch loss in the first line. One is able to see through these areas that the sampler has been placed on a similar coloured backing cloth at a later date which is effective in making the damage a lot less noticeable. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also minor bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original frame which has a hand painted finish. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" (sight size) and 15 1/2" x 15 1/2" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
