EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY BIRDS, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ALICE WARD AGED 12 - 1843
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:78014 |
Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effort of an infant's handAnd while her fingers on the canvass moveEngage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her have a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif with a delightful bird on a blossom branch to its left and right followed by a tiny heart, squirrel and fruit basket. Alice's details and the date of 1843 are stitched above the birds with a small bird at each side followed by an ornate swag. There is a floral urn beneath the two birds with a dog, floral bush and stag to the left and right with a flower above each stag. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow gold outline followed by a carnation border with a flower in each of the four corners of the linen. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby and darker around the edges with a darker strip running vertically down the right side. There are also a few, very small barely noticeable areas of damage. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Alice first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are areas of damage around the edges of the linen.Measures 15 3/4" across x 16 1/4"
