Small mid 19th century sampler by Julia.L.Fooks - 1869. Worked in red wool on a close weave gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains the rhyming couplet - Be to others kind and true as you'd have others be to you. Julia's name, her place of residence - Dartford, Kent - and the date of 186...9 run across the bottom edge then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow zigzag border. The gauze has overall, quite dark discolouration consistent with its age, with a faint stain around the 8's in the row of numbers and general light creasing. The red of the thread is good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Julia first stitched it. Measures 8 1/4" across x 9 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING.
