Small mid 19th century Bristol sampler by Mary Hillier - 1867. Worked in red wool on a close weave cotton gauze, this little sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout - and as is typical of a Bristol sampler, every inch of the gauze has been worked. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and Roman numerals all underlined with various examples of foliate corner patterns which have a star to the left and a ...basket to the right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central crown surrounded by a floral garland which has Queen Victoria's initials to each side and Mary's name and the date of 1867 beneath. The remaining gauze on each side of the crown is then stitched with examples of border patterns and numerous small motifs including a bible, crowns, house to name but a few. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, somewhat brown to the field and paler around the edges which also have some remnants of paper on them. There are also some small dark stains, the largest being to the lower right of the central garland in the lower section. The red of the thread has mellowed from its original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Mary first stitched it. This photo also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. Measures 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
