Small mid 19th century needlepoint - c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in silk on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of a rural setting with a church nestled amongst trees to the left and a stile to the right. A mother has placed her basket on a wall to have a rest as she wafts a handkerchief around her face, presumably to cool down. Her young son and daughter are tugging impatiently at her sleeve and apron..., whilst their pet spaniel looks up at her expectantly. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some small dark spots and water staining along the bottom edge. The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The needlepoint is contained within a mid 19th century rosewood frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the frame having scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, some deeper than others.Measures 8 1/2" across x 8 3/4" (sight size) and 12 1/2" x 12 3/4" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
