Impressively large mid 19th needlepoint c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in wool with lustrous highlights on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of a basket brimming with sumptuous flowers both in bud and full bloom. Two red flowers have fallen to the ground whilst the topmost blooms have a red parrot perched on top. The gauze which is visible has overall discolouration consistent with its age wi...th fraying to the edges where it has been cut at some point of time. The colours of the wool are good with some small speckled marks on the background and some small areas of stitch loss on the bottom edge and background but none apparent on the main body of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large piece measuring 20" x 26" to the edges of the stitch work.
