This listing is for a Vintage Navajo Diné Indian Sand Painting / Sandpainting Yei Bi Chei / Holy Girl Figure by A Watchman Panel .
Note on back of the panel reads: HOLY Girl , Sand are Natural Colored rocks grinded, A Watchman , Box 1508 , Sheepsprings, N.M.
I suspect initial A stands for Alfred.
Navajo conceive of the Yei as intermediaries - man & the gods. They are represented as elongate straight body figures made for certain... rituals believed to aid in the treatment of any ailing members of the tribe.
As with all representations of the Yei figure, there is an intentional mistake. According to Diné tradition, all perfect sand paintings must be destroyed by sunset of the day they are created. I though do not know what would the intentional mistake be in this one.
About 16 1/8 inches by 8 1/16 inches by 5/16 inches in thickness , weighing 701 grams net weight.
In excellent vintage as shown condition with two small spots on the plain field on left as shown along with other irregularities as shown.
