Renowned Navajo silversmith Kirk Smith was killed in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 17th. He was 55 years old. Following an altercation in the parking lot of a Subway sandwich shop, Kirk jumped onto the hood of a picku...p truck which had hit his vehicle in the parking lot. The driver of the truck swerved to dislodge Kirk from the truck's hood, Kirk lost his grip and was run over by the truck. He died some hours later at the hospital in Albuquerque. The driver of the truck fled the scene and has not been found. In 1992 Kirk Smith was just beginning to make Navajo Traditional Revival designs of his own at that time. He had been working for Navajo smith Harry Morgan and began to do his own work on the side. He often made cluster jewelry and his work was always very solid and well-made. He was a prolific silversmith and one of the principal makers of Navajo Traditional Revival jewelry. He and his artistic gift will be sadly missed.
