HYPOCEPHALUS OF TCHE-HER26th Dynasty 664-525 BCEngraved stone disc, quartzite-limestone, 5.5 inches (14 cm), half inch thickness (13 mm), with display stand & description. Reproduction of British Museum HYPOCEPHALUS of "Tche-Her, son of Utchat-Shu" excavated at Abydos in the late 19th century and dated to the Egyptian Late Period. Both star map & prayer text, the Hypocephalus was placed beneath the head of the deceased to assist the soul's journey to the Higher Worlds beyond the stars.... They first appeared during the Saite Dynasty (663-525 BC.) and their use continued into the early Christian era. Hypocephalus literally means "that which is beneath the head." They were fashioned in bronze, clay or wood and sometimes even simply painted on papyrus.The hieroglyphic inscription reads: "You have set your flame under the head of Ra and he is in the divine netherworld of Heliopolis ... May you reach the Star Gate of Osiris ... Symbolized by a crowned Osiris, the Orion constellation was the soul's final destination and central feature of the Hypocephalus. Orion was famously known to the Egyptians as "Stargate of the Gods."
