SOUL JOURNEY STAR MAPAbydos 26th Dynasty 664-525 BCInscribed relief disc, 5.5 inches (14 cm), half inch thickness (13 mm), with display stand & back-label description. Reproduction cast of Hypocephalus Death Disc of "Tche-Her, son of Utchat-Shu" recovered from Abydos in the late 19th century, dated to the Egyptian Late Period. The "Hypocephalus, " both star map & prayer text, was placed beneath the head of the deceased to assist the soul's journey to the Higher Worlds beyond the stars.... The inscription reads: "You have set your flame under the head of Ra and He is in the divine Netherworld of Heliopolis ... May you reach the Star Gate of Osiris ... May you come into being with the Divine Flame within your head." BACKSTORY:One of the more unusual Egyptian artifacts, the Hypocephalus first appeared during the Saite Dynasty (663-525 BC.) and its use continued into the early Christian era. Hypocephalus means literally "that which is beneath the head." They were fashioned in bronze, clay or wood and sometimes even painted onto papyrus. The Hypocephalus is intimately connected to the "Spells of Coming Forth" in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. They typically carry a prayer that the head (considered seat of consciousness and the soul) might transcend and achieve the "radiance of a glorified being" and use the directions on the star map to find its way to the Higher Worlds. Symbolized by a crowned Osiris, the Orion constellation was a central feature of the Hypocephalus and famously known to the Egyptians as the "Stargate of the Gods." The chief star gods are pictured in their celestial boats, as well as the great Heavenly Cow Hathor who represents the entire Milky Way and Nehebka, the fearsome serpent-headed deity, judge of the dead and guardian of the Gates of the Underworld. Both star map & prayer text, the Hypocephalus was placed beneath the head of the deceased to assist the soul's journey to the Higher Worlds.

The Hypocephalus first appeared during the Saite Dynasty (663-525 BC.) and its use continued into the early Christian era. Hypocephalus means literally "that which is beneath the head." They were fashioned in bronze, clay or wood and sometimes even painted onto papyrus.

Connected to the "Spells of Coming Forth" in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, they typically carry a prayer that the head (considered seat of consciousness and the soul) might transcend and achieve the "radiance of a glorified being." The soul was expected to use the directions on the star map to find its way to the Higher Worlds.

Symbolized by a crowned Osiris, the Orion constellation was the soul's final destination and central feature of the Hypocephalus. It was famously known to the Egyptians as "Stargate of the Gods." The main star gods are pictured in their celestial boats, as well as the great Heavenly Cow Hathor who represents the Milky Way and Nehebka, the fearsome serpent-headed deity, judge of the dead and guardian of the Gates of the Underworld.
