For that matter, since Waltham was in Massachusetts, Confederate men and women hadno way to buy them. Thus, in the early 1860 era the Swiss watch was the mostwidely used - North and South. Even Tobias engraved watches, the most prolificimporters and suppliers of pocket watches for use in the North and South weremostly Swiss made and not English. It...’s also interesting to note first handaccounts of military camp life reporting that men often used watches to barterwith since watches were portable and the value of paper money was not certain. This auction is for a key wind, antique, Civil War period full hunter pocket watch. The cover has a patriotic engraving of a spread winged War Eagle clutching a Union Shield. The back cover has an engraved tin clad, brown water riverboat. Thebasic details of the patriotic engraving are well worn indicating this soldier carried this watch long after the war was over. Inside, theworks inside cover is marked: F. JACOT MATILE, LOCLE PatentLever Full Jewelled. The movementis wound with a key. The watch does not run. The movement is loose in the case.It has a white porcelain dial with painted roman numerals with a . Original antique glasscrystal is missing and the bezel, original hour, minute and second hands remain. Double back case with inner cover is made ofsilver. In addition the case is marked same serial number as above. The face has F. JACOT MATILE. painted on the face.I am nowatchmaker so I won’t even take a guess at what’s wrong but if it’s working atall it may only need a good cleaning. I have no idea when it was last cleaned, but it looks good. SIZE: 3-1/2 inches tall including the stemand ring.
