WATCHESDURING THE CIVIL WAR ERA: During the War Between the States, noteveryone could afford an American made P.S. Bartlett timepiece. For that matter, since Waltham was in Massachusetts, Confederate men and women hadno way to buy them. Thus, in the early 1860 era the Swiss watch was the mostwidely used - North and South. Even Tobias engraved watches, the most prolificimporters and suppliers of pocket watches for use in the North and South weremostly Swiss made and not English. It’s ...also interesting to note first handaccounts of military camp life reporting that men often used watches to barterwith since watches were portable and the value of paper money was not certain. This auction is for a key wind, antique, Civil War period pocket watch. The back cover has a patriotic engraving of the 6th Corps badge. Thebasic details of the patriotic engraving are strong and vibrant. Inside, theback inside cover is marked: CYLINDER DIX RUBIS. The movementis wound with a key. The same key may be used to set the time. It has a porcelain dial with roman numerals and isin perfect condition. Original antique glasscrystal and second hand. No hour or minute hands No key is included but I wound the watch withanother key and the watch does not run. I am nowatchmaker so I won’t even take a guess at what’s wrong. I have no idea when it was last cleaned, but it looks good. SIZE: 3 inches wide w/o including the stemand ring.
