Kathe Kruse Doll VIII, Friedebald The German Child
Item History & Price
This Kathe Kruse doll was made after a bust by the artist Igor van Jakimow. The bust was depicting Kathe Kruse's son Friedebald (means "soon peace"). The cloth-covered swivel head has one seam at the back of the neck. The oil-painted facial features are beautifully made with radiating irises and the original wig has locks of human hair, individually attached by hand. The slender cloth body has sewn-on arms ( one arm bent ) and jointed disc legs. The legs have seams at the ba...ck of the knees. One sole is stamped with four digits (difficult to read) and the thumbs are separately sewn-on to the hands. Doll VIII was first manufactured with a cloth head (1929). A cardboard head with a cloth covering was used from 1946-1955. I think this is the later version.
The doll has been played with, is loosely strung, and could use a visit to the hairdresser. But on the whole, he is in a rather good condition.
His Tyrolean hat and jacket are possibly Kathe Kruse's clothes and they are in good condition. The shoes are professional made, but not by Kathe Kruse. Pants and shirt are home-made. They are old but very simple. The shirt is in a poor condition.
Friedebald measures 21½" or 52 cm. This is the larger size of "The German Child" and number VIII of Kathe Kruse's dolls.
