Antique Jaques Library Chess Set – Unweighted This is a lovely, antique, library-sized chess set made in England by Jaques of London. The Jaques label on the lid suggests that this set was made in 1920 (reference: Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets by Alan Fersht - page 10). I believe that this chess set is made of boxwood and ebony. I have tried to capture the true condition of all the chess pieces. The King-side Knights and Rooks have their respective stamp...s. At the base of the White King, you can make out "Jaques London." There is a small chip at the base of one of the Black Pawns. In the extra picture, there is a small chip in the base of the Black Queen-side Rook. The extra picture of the 3 Black Pawns and 2 White Pawns is to show that the finish of the Black Pawns is not as even as the rest of the Black Pawns (likely due to natural wear) and that the White Pawns have no defects, but rather have natural wood discoloration and a natural knot in the wood at the base. I believe that the finial of the Kings can come off - the White King's finial can be taken off and placed back on. I believe the Black King's finial can be taken off, although I have never tried to do so. The Jaques of London slide wood top is missing its right pull-edge (as seen on the right side of the label).
The picture of the felts is to show that these pieces have the same wear and are from the same set. All pictures are taken on a board with 2.25 inch squares - board is not included. This chess set would play nicely on a board with 1.5-1.75 inch squares. I am "thinning the herd" and decreasing the number of chess sets I have. Additionally, this set is just too small and too lovely for my kids to play with. Should you have questions, please direct message me. Addendum: A collector pointed out that the Black Queen may have been replaced in the past - I never noticed that and, as such, am pointing that out in the spirit of transparency.
