Up for auction is a cool, hollow-carved Canvasback Drake decoy made by Chris Craft, founder of the Chris Craft Boat Company of Algonac, Michigan, ca. 1910. The decoy is in very old paint (backlight does not show presence of non-lead based paint) and it does show wear from use in particular on the body, which appears to have had the paint taken down to reveal some original paint and some bare wood. There is some separation at the neck seat. The bird has... a few shot marks. The bill carving is very well done while the posture is terrific with a head that is turned to the right that sits on a high neck shelf. It has good glass eyes and the left one may be a replacement. The bird has a classic Chris Smith original lead keel and anchor line strap. NOTE: Winning bidder will also receive a copy of Barney Crandell's "Decoy Magazine" article about Chris Smith and his work that includes photos of similar decoys with the same lead weight on the bottom.
