Up for auction is a really good Glasseye Drake Redhead made by the Mason decoy factory ca. 1910. This decoy is in very strong original paint and exhibits nice scalloping along the breast and still has those great painter's brush swirls on the body that collectors regard so highly. There were some paint strokes added to the sides a long time ago (black light shows no difference in the paint which suggests that these are very ...early). This may have been done to reduce glare off of the whiter sides. There is a small in-the-making filled area on the left side. The decoy was used and typically has rubs to the edges of the bill, top of the head and end of the tail. It does have an age check on the left side of the tail and left side of the breast, as well as a couple of checks on the bottom. The glass eyes are original but the left one has a crack in it. Remarkably, it retains its original neck filler with only the slightest chipping toward the back side. This is as good and honest as you will find in one of these early Mason standard grade models by this famous Detroit factory. Measures 13-1/2” long; 5-1/4 wide; and 6-1/4” tall.
