Original Description:
Exceptionally Rare and simply fantastic, ca1905 William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody / Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Cabinet Card Photograph of Bill Cody in the show arena galloping on horseback and shooting target balls which are being thrown into the air by a Native American Sioux Indian Cast Member. This Photograph was the personal property of Buffalo Bill Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - granddaughter of Cody's daugh...ter Irma.
This outstanding, Card Mount Photograph, taken in Austria during the Show’s European Tour, measures approx. 4 ¾ by 3 1/2” and mounted on its original, photographer’s card mount (overall size of card mount is 7 3/4" by 6 1/4”). This Photograph, from The Cody Family collection, is among the rarest professional images taken of Cody. It pictures Buffalo Bill performing the Show arena executing one of the most iconic “acts” in the Show – the highlight performance at each and every appearance of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and yet, due to the high speed and excitement of the event was almost never captured by a still photographer.
In the Photo Cody sits upright in the saddle not holding the reins of his galloping horse but rather aiming his Winchester Repeating Rifle skyward awaiting the appearance of his next target. A Native American Indian Cast member dressed in full regalia gallops in front of Bill holding a basket of target balls in his left hand and preparing to toss one of the delicate glass balls high into the air with his right hand. This performance by Buffalo Bill Cody always occupied an important position in the Show’s program and was among the most memorable and integral parts of the show.
The back of the Card Mount carries the mark of the photographer – Georg H. Kuhrner of Vienna, Austria.
We know of less than a handful of other still photographs of Bill shooting Target Ball while galloping on horseback including one owned by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum and a second that sold at auction in 2014 for $4, 400.
Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody's last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952).
In 2014 the bulk of the Cody-Garlow Collection was sold at auction with Patsy holding onto her favorite Photograph of Bill and performers from the Show. With Patsy’s death last year, we were luck enough to purchase some of the most intimate Photos of Bill Cody which we will be offering over the next few weeks in our weekly eBay auctions.
