Original Description:
Exceptionally Rare and simply fantastic, ca1914 Buffalo Bill's Wild West, unpublished, large size, unmounted Photograph of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody meeting with the founder of The National Order of Cowboy Rangers – Denver Journalist Albert U. Mayfield. The National Order of Cowboy Rangers was a short lived, Masonic like fraternal benefit organization that was incorporated in Wyoming in 1914 and paid sick, accident and funeral benefits to its members. In addition to this, th...e society sought to emulate the true characteristics of the "Great West" by exemplifying the spirit of the men who pioneered the western United States.
This Photograph was the personal property of Buffalo Bill Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - granddaughter of Cody's daughter Irma.
This beautiful Photograph of Buffalo Bill Cody measures approx. 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" and is un-mounted. It pictures Bill seated at a desk in what appears to be a newspaper office. Seated across from Cody is the Denver Journalist Albert U. Mayfield. Another unidentified man sits next to Mayfield taking notes. Cody wears his trademark, wide brimmed hat and is smoking a cigar. There is a period, manuscript notation on the reverse that reads simply “National Order Cowboy Rangers” and the Image has the impressed mark of the photographer – Delux Studio of Denver, Colorado.
We believe that this image was taken around the time of the founding of The National Order of Cowboy Rangers – an organization that Cody would have surely supported and one that not only would have courted Cody’s approval but also took part in the ceremonies during the funeral of Buffalo Bill. We have been unable to find any information regarding the meeting documented by this Photograph but we did uncover the following newspaper report of the funeral of Buffalo Bill: “On January 15, Cody's remains were escorted by silk top-hatted officers of Denver Elks Lodge No. 17 to the Lodge building at the corner of 14th and California where funeral services were conducted. The caisson was followed by Col. Cody's favorite horse, McKinley, escorted by members of the National Order of Cowboy Rangers. The Cowboy Rangers wore the red bandannas of their order. As the casket was lifted from the caisson and carried into the Lodge building, McKinley seemed restless and attempted to break free from the Cowboy Ranger holding the horse as if to follow the casket into the Lodge. As the great doors of the Lodge building closed, McKinley whinnied, broke free and ran to the caisson. Sniffing and whinnying yet again, the great white horse circled the caisson. The Cowboy Ranger grabbed McKinley's reins. As McKinley was quietly led away, the horse turned his head and stared at the doors of the Lodge building through which the casket of his master had disappeared”.
This Photograph was the personal property of Buffalo Bill Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - granddaughter of Cody's daughter Irma.
Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody's last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952). The Photograph offered here was the property of Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow, Buffalo Bill's direct great-granddaughter. It was the property of the Cody-Garlow family and was originally the property of "William F. Buffalo Bill" Cody. This Photograph spent most of the last half of the 20th century on loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of the West and bears a BBHC index number on the verso (this Photograph does have a BBHC index number in pencil on the reverse).
This rare and wonderful, ca1914 Western Americana / Buffalo Bill's Wild West Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. There is some light edge wear at the edges and small creases at the upper and lower right hand corners as can be seen in the scans below.
