Original Description:
Exceptionally Rare and original, 1910’s William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody Photograph / Real Photo Postcard depicting Buffalo Bill and Gordon “Pawnee Bill" Lillie seated in an early touring Car. This fascinating Photo depicts Cody seated in the rear seat of the open air Automobile with Pawnee Bill seated in the front seat. This Photograph was the personal property of Irma Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - grandda...ughter of Cody's daughter Irma.
This outstanding and fascinating Photo measures approx.5 1/2" by 3 3/8" and pictures Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill both wearing wide brimmed hats and suits. There are two other unidentified men in the photograph which appears to have been taken on the main street of an American Town during the Street Parade that preceded every appearance of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. The occasion of this Photograph is lost to history but it likely was taken during the period of the “Two Bill’s” Show.
The back of the Photograph features a printed, postcard back with an AZO stampbox having upward pointing triangles in each corner dating the Card to the period 1904 to 1918.
This Photograph came to us with a collection of Images that descended in the Cody family directly to Bill’s Great-Granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow (b.1948). Many of the Photographs in this collection have manuscript notations in the hand of Buffalo Bill’s daughter Irma Cody Garlow, his wife Louisa and his granddaughter Jane Cody Garlow. Surely this was a personal item treasured by Irma and the family.
Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody's last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952).
The Photograph offered here was the property of Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow, Buffalo Bill's direct great-granddaughter. It was the property of the Cody-Garlow family and was originally the property of William F. “Buffalo Bill" Cody’s daughter Irma. This Photograph, from the Cody-Garlow Collection, spent most of the last half of the 20th century on loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of the West, and has a pencil notation on the reverse with the Center’s inventory number.
This rare and fascinating, 1910’s Buffalo Bill Cody Photograph / Real Photo Postcard is in very good condition. While the Photograph is crisp and clean and exhibits good contrast and tonality, the focus is a bit soft. Overall the Photo is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully.
