SET OF 24” DISSTON D-23 HAND SAWS - Hand SharpenedHere is a set of 24” Disston D-23saws in good ready to use condition. This is a set of early D-23 saws with theearly style handles from the 1920’s. These saws are good user saws for thewoodworker who wants a set of quality ready to use saws. With these 24” sizesaws it is a good set for woodworkers working in a smaller shop setup orsomeone of smaller body frame like women woodworkers or teen woodworkers. Ilike them this smaller s...ize as they have a very light weight feel to them andoffer a lot of control when sawing. The D-23 saws had features from themore expensive saws, such as carved apple wood handles and polished steel witha straight back. The handle has a set in blade with a cover top handle like theD-8 saws. Like most saws after the 1920’s these are classified as “Lightweight”saws by Disston. The rip saw is a 24” straight backsaw with 5-1/2ppi freshly hand sharpened. A very clean straight saw plate –highly polished from factory with a clear etch and a flawless applewood handle. It has a clean factory polished blade that has no rust or pitting. Ithas a thick plate thickness of .040 just above the tooth line and .028 up topso very little set was needed. It cuts fast and smooth in both hardwoods andsoftwoods. A good saw for use on a saw horse for ripping to width. The crosscut saw is a 24” straightback saw that is clean, straight and crisp. It is a fast cutting fine toothed 9ppipitch sharpened with a 15 degree rake and 20 degree fleam for fast cutting andstrong tooth structure. It has a thickness just above the tooth line of .033”and up top it is .027” so very little set was needed for smooth sawing. Goodfor quick straight sawing of both hardwoods and softwoods. The carved applewood handle is in crisp perfect condition with the original finish. Acomfortable handle for my large hands it offers balanced control with smoothworking motion. As can be seen in the photos the crosscut had rust on it at one time and when I cleaned it it did leave some light staining etching from the rust but not really pitted. Much smoother then the photo looks. Thesesaws are perfect for the shop worker who needs a good set of saws for handdimensioning of lumber on saw horses, before your bench work. These are sawsthat will last a lifetime and be handed down to your next generation. I have recently been selling many sets of sawsfrom my collection in fine condition to woodworkers who have emailed me withcompliments on the quality of the saws and their smooth quick sawing action.See my feedback for more testimonies of buyer satisfaction.I havecollected handsaws for over 25 years and have enjoyed learning the history ofthis industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teachwoodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. It was during thistime that I realized the best way to get quality tools for my students was torecondition vintage tools. Having learned saw sharpening from my Japanesewoodworking instructor at the University of Hawaii during the late 1970’s, Iwas able to cheaply supply my students with vintage quality saws to use inclass. I am not a professional sawdoctor but have spent the last 30 years as a shop teacher and had to sharpenall my shop saws and other tools over the years. Those kids knew how to dull asaw and often I had to keep them after school for an hour when I saw themabusing a saw. That way they came to realize what I went thru to get a saw inperfect working order. This consists ofjointing the saw to get it straight, shaping and sharpening, re-jointing andre-sharpening, gently setting the teeth to get a smooth sawing action in thekerf, then final sharpening. Finally I lightly hone the edge with a fine stoneand polish the blade- before testing the smoothness of the cut.
