Original Description:
Late 18th century linen and wool work sampler by Isabella Parkin aged 10 - 1798. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper edge of the linen is stitched with a row of four floral motifs with a flower basket beneath with a diamond to the left and right of its topmost bloom then flanked by a tall flower with a bird on top of each. There is a floral urn to the side of the flower basket with a crown above and a diamond and heart motif down its right si...de. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a row of three tall floral motifs with a crown and heart to the left and right of the topmost bloom on the central flower and a diamond on the left side of its base. The right side flower has a tulip to its left, a star motif to its right and a diamond, heart and dog down its right side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse followed by Isabella's details and the date of 1798 with a heart at the end of the first and fourth rows and a crown to the side of the date

The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges which also have some light staining. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss, particularly down the lower left side which has resulted in the disappearance of the surname of Isabella's tutor. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Isabella first stitched it.Measures 10" x 22 1/2"
