MID/LATE 18TH CENTURY VERSE IN A FLORAL FRAMEWORK SAMPLER INITIALLED EB - 1775
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:83202 |
As billows roll to meet their fateAnd break upon the shoreSo rolls that billow, human lifeSo breaks and is no moreWho would in life repose his blissSo subject to decayReady with wings at every stepTo start and fly awayStretch'd in the grave our last retreatWe view at ...distance thereThe vain persutes of busy manAnd smile at human care
The first two stanzas of the verse are underlined with a floral chain, whilst the last stanza has a large bloom below it. This bloom has a tied floral spray to its right and left with a meandering trail of flowers emanating from each to enclose the verse. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep arcaded floral border with the initials EB and the date of 1775 in the bottom right corner. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges, moreso in the lower left quadrant. The colours of the silks are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are several small areas of damage to the field of the linen and more extensive damage around the edges which has resulted in some stitch loss to the outer floral border. Measures 12 1/4" x 18"
