Second printing of the celebrated Peacock Edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece, illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. Featuring a gilt-stamped peacock motif to the covers and over 160 illustrations and decorations, Thomson charmingly captured the elements of Austen's wit and the nuances of her social commentary. The Peacock Edition remains one of the most sought-after editions of Austen's work.
Lo...ndon: George Allen, 1895. Original dark green cloth with gilt-stamped titles and peacock, all edges gilt, pp. xxvii, [i], 476 [ii]. Front hinge starting but still sound, a few stray stains to rear board, wear with light fraying to board extremities, a bit of loss to spine crown with a closed tear extending down approximately one inch. Bookplate and small bookshop sticker to front pastedown, bookplate to front endpaper, small illustration affixed to verso of front endpaper, else clean and free of markings. Foxing to frontispiece, title page and tissue guard, small stain to page 208, gutter lightly strained in a few places and starting to gap at page 240/241. Overall, a rather pleasing copy of an increasingly scarce and beautiful edition.
