The Call Of The Wild, 1903 First Edition, By Jack London
Item History & Price
Here we offer the 1903 first retail edition, stated 2nd print, of Jack London's American classic, The Call of the Wild, published by MacMillan, New York, illustrated... by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull, decorated by Charles Edward Hooper, including impressed, inked, and gilted boards. For many of us the first real novel we ever read, Call of the Wild is an iconic American novel (one of the books targeted by the Nazi book burnings.)
The original book came wrapped in a highly-acidic oaktag dust jacket that degraded within a decade or so. I have never seen a complete one. This first edition comes wrapped in an acid-free professional facsimile of the first edition dust jacket that you can get only here, printed with archival inks on a heavy slate gray sheet of ph-neutral, vellum-textured French art paper.
Also included in your purchase is a facsimile copy of the original advertisement insert MacMillan included with the book and a copy of period reviews and the first newspaper ad for Jack London's new novel.
Worn boards with faded spine cloth (please see pics). Uninscribed front endpages have some wear at gutter and a small moisture stain; rear endpages are intact and feature a period bookseller label. Original frontispiece tissue is intact. Three minor repairs on text pages using acid-free binder's tissue. Two corners chipped off (see pic.) Binding is very tight and square; very clean, bright, and crisp text and illustrations. 231 pages, plus 2 pages of ads.
