Stated 1st Printing, Aug. 1953. Spine is slightly slanted, binding is sound, no loose or missing pages, pages are lightly age toned and free of any markings or dog ears (neat light ink name/address to inside of front cover). Small corner creases. Mild chipping along spine. Minimal edge wear. Small rubbed spots and faint spider creases back cover.
A solid copy of of one of the high points in early lesbian pulps. The only book Highsmith wrote under the Morgan pseudonym and her only lesbian novel -- her first book following her enormously successful debut novel Strangers on a Train, and she wanted to avoid the risk of publishing a lesbian romance under her own name in the conservative Fifties. This was also the first lesbian novel to break from the usual Fifties lesbian pulp formula and have a "happy ending" (or at least one without and ending with the obligatory suicide or "conversion" of the main character). The 1952 Coward-McCann hardcover 1st edition is extremely rare, and there is only one copy for sale online at $3750. Grier A***
