1804Selling here are the first two volumes (of three) from Johann Caspar Lavater's 'Essays on Physiognomy...', published in London, 1804. The two volumes present containing a total of two hundred and ten engraved plates.
8vo, two volumes uniformly bound in period half calf over marbled paper covered boards, both boards detached from volume one, upper board detached from volume two, spines gilt ruled and numbered, with remains of red morocco labels, all page edges speckled blue. Period plain endpapers, pastedown and fe with two previous owners bookplates. The books measure 16cm by 24.5cm.The contents of the two volumes present are complete, meeting collation: cxlix, 242; [4], 324pp, with a total of two hundred and ten engraved plates (including the frontispiece to volume I).

Flyleaves to vol 1 are loose and chipped. Text blocks otherwise firm, contents in good crisp condition, clean but for light toning, scattered minor spots / creases or marks, initial few leaves a bit foxed.The binding is holding firmly and is in very good to fine condition, with just the minimum of handling wear.
