Small late 19th century sampler c.1890 or slightly earlier. The letters L.B & E.B are contained within the upper section of the sampler, of which one set may be those of its creator but they may just be random letters. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a row of alphabet letters with the earlier mentioned letters below, whilst the middle section contains two... laurel wreaths surrounding a lyre. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a block pattern in the left corner, a pink bird to the centre and the letter B in the right corner. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general grubbiness and some small patches of faint staining. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage in the lower section of the gauze. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 9 1/4" across x 8 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
