Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a nice, beautifully hand carved, large cuckoo clock that was produced about 75 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany." This clock is just gorgeous, has a great aged look to it, has been well maintained, has wooden hands and a wood cuckoo bird, and ...has a rare extra dark walnut finish; very nice! The clock is carved from cured and aged Lindenwood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The front of a case looks like an intricately carved wooden grape vine with five deeply carved, large grape leaves. There is a large carved wooden bird nestled into the vine at the top of the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. The top is a separate piece and is held to the roof via the old hook and eye system. There is another fancy carved wooden grape leaf on the wooden pendulum. The wooden dial has a black background and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy wooden hands to pointout the time. There is a large wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. The wooden door easilyremoves to allow access to the all metal, very early design, weight driven movement. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. The wooden whistle or bellow tubesare intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottomof each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. The bird gives offa single cuckoo sound and then returns to the safeconfines of the clock, closing the door behind him. At the top of each hour, the wood bird appears again and correctly cuckoos the current number of hoursbefore going back inside the clock; fascinating! I'velooked the clock over fairly well and can't find any damage, old repairs or missing parts. It does show some aging but is absolutely gorgeous on display! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. It is most impressive and very nice example of old style Black Forest carving. It is an impressive size too measuring about 14" high (not countingthe weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 9" across the top. It is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We oftenrecommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocksserviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classicclock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes completeas shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself and is certain to be the focalpoint of any collection. Any guests in your home or office will bemore than pleased to see this rare German timepiece in action.
