EARLY 19TH CENTURY PROSE, MOTIF & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY MARY MOORE - 1804

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Moore - 1804. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of alphabet letters with Mary's name and the date of 1804 beneath which has a butterfly to its left and right. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following prose verse which has a fruit tree and flower basket on each side

The lower middle section of the linen is stitched with a central stepped framework which has a fruit basket flanked by a flower basket inside and a carnation urn to its left and right. The side edges are then stitched with a double meandering floral border, whilst the top edge is stitched with an exquisite arcaded flower and strawberry border and the bottom with an equally exquisite strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges which also have paler lines from where the sampler has originally been tacked onto a stretcher. The sampler is now on a cloth covered backing board, done a fair while ago judging by the discolouration to its back which can be seen in the last photo. There are several small areas of damage to the field of the linen and more extensive damage around the edges which have resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. With the sampler having been attached to the cloth I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. I will be shipping the sampler on the board as it is keeping the damage stable.Measures 12 3/4" x 15"
