1870s NATIVE AMERICAN SOUTHERN PLAINS / APACHE INDIAN MEDICINE BAG DANCE APRON

Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:30826Tribal Affiliation: Southern Plains / Apache
Original Description:
Exceptionally rare and important, ca1870’s (or earlier) Native American Southern Plains (believed to be Apache) Indian Dance Apron Style, Medicine Man’s Bag with elk tooth and prairie dog paw drops. This outstanding, mid 19th century Dance Apron /Medicine Bag measures approx. 21" across the top edge and is approx 10” long..
The Bag is made of a single piece of very soft, brain tanned buckskin and is rawhide and sinew sewn. The front surface features se...ven groupings of buckskin fringe drops with two elk teeth and the paw of a small mammal believed to be a prairie dog paw. There are some VERY faint remnants of yellow paint to areas of the Bag. The opening at the top of the Bag is trimmed with a delicate border of clear beads.
It appears the Medicine Bag / Apron was originally tied around its owner’s waist with rawhide thongs but a very long time ago it was affixed to a beaded hide belt using a rawhide strip and early hook and eyes. The Belt appears to be Apache and is simply decorated using medium blue, chalk white and turquoise beads. While the Belt is 19th century, it was definitely a later addition to the Medicine Bag / Dance Apron
We have had some difficulty identifying this outstanding Buckskin Bag / Apron. It is quite obviously a meaningful and important object but even the experts that we asked to help us were unsure of its tribal affiliation and / or its specific ritual use. The consensus was that it was likely an early Dance Apron they also added “It looks very good piece”. To me that is an understatement! Any information that would help us to further identify this wonderful Artifact would be greatly appreciated.
Provenance: This Medicine Bag / Dance Apron came to us from an outstanding Ohio Collection.
The Southern Plains Medicine Bag / Dance Apron offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Hide Medicine Bag crafted in the mid 19th century. The Bag comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This very rare and original, 1870’s (or earlier) Southern Plains / Apache Buckskin Medicine Bag is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved - sound and supple with age appropriate light soiling and a series of small holes on the back side that appear to have originally been part of the structure of the Bag (possibly a rawhide thong was passed through the holes). The buckskin fringe and the elk tooth drops are well preserved while the animal paw has lost two of its thin, delicate nails and some of the surface fur. As stated above, the Bag came to us affixed to a Beaded Hide Belt which is in very good condition with soiling and some minimal bead loss.
An exceptionally rare and important, ca1870’s (or earlier) Native American Southern Plains (believed to be Apache) Indian Dance Apron Style, Medicine Man’s Bag with elk tooth and prairie dog paw drops and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
