Tribal Affiliation: Northern Plains / Sioux
Original Description:
Very rare and wonderful, ca1890’s Native American Central Plains / Sioux Indian, Pigment Decorated Hide / Parfleche Cylindrical War Bonnet Case.
This outstanding, late 19th century Sioux Parfleche Headdress Case measures approx. 15 1/2” long and 4” in diameter. The Bonnet Case is made of a medium to heavy weight, parfleche rawhide construction and sinew sewn. The Case is decorated on all sides (including the ends) with mineral ocher pigment / polychrom...e painted design and there is a 14” long, rawhide fringe drop. The Case features a traditional, geometric pattern showing red, blue, and yellow colors as can be seen in the scans below.
The term “parfleche” was first coined by the French fur traders and derived from the French word “parer” meaning defend and “fleche” meaning arrows, as the hide was tough enough to be used as a shield to deflect an arrow. This very rare, Parfleche Box likely held graphics that were maps, geographical depictions such as rivers and mountains, or important ceremonial items. Once the parfleche left the family / clan, the story was lost and the parfleche became Indian Art rather than a meaningful storyteller.
The Parfleche War Bonnet Case offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is not NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Sioux Pigment Decorated Parfleche Box / Case crafted in the late 19th century. The Case comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This rare and beautiful, ca1890’s Central Plains / Sioux Parfleche War Bonnet Case features original paint decoration and is in overall very good condition. The War Bonnet Case is very well preserved and retains its original closures. The colors are strong and the Case displays beautifully. There are a few old breaks on the top side of the cylinder and some old rawhide thong and sinew repairs (see the scans below). The Case retains all of the original ties that bind the elements together and secure the closure / cap.
A rare and original, ca1890’s Native American Central Plains / Sioux Indian, Pigment Decorated, Parfleche / Hide War Bonnet Case and a fantastic addition to any Native American Art & Artifact collection!!!
