Dear friends & clients: We have more Fine Arts & Antiques than we canbegin to keep up with, as to eBay – at least 4, 000 period pieces. Group photos will give you a slightidea of the depth of my collections, and Elly's inventory - keep watching thispage. R. Josef Morethan 23 years ago in Paris, a published survey stated that the number ofpracticing Catholics in France was down to 15% - in a country that was onceoverwhelmingly observant. This has had major consequences for material culture– many churches have been deconsecrated, and a large quantity of religiousobjects – personal, from the clergy, châteaux chapels, churches and cathedrals(as early as the Middle Ages) - appears on the commercial market.Asimilar trend is manifesting across Europe; the degree to which it happens isboth startling and sad, in that one would expect people to wish to retain moreof their own material culture & historical identity – post-1850 crucifixesand holy water stoups can be seen in verylarge quantities at flea markets across Europe. Despite the historicallyoverwhelmingly Catholic population in France, Italy, Portugal & Spain, earlier pieces have become increasingly rare (and faked) – and, more and morecollectors step in to snap up pieces as they appear.Mostunfortunately, French television is now producing clones of the numerousBritish (mostly BBC) shows, which flagrantly encourage the selling on of bothirreplaceable personal family history, and important objects of materialculture. Once fine arts & antiques are separated from their historicalcontext, the fragile thread of history is snapped, and can rarely be recovered. However, as a result of the enormous level of piety in Catholic France in the 19thcentury, it’s not always easy to be sure if a candlestick or holy water stoupwas ecclesiastical or domestic, and in this case, I honestly don’t know. Atnearly 12” tall, this candlestick would seem to have been a likely candidatefor a niche in a chapel or church, yet the pristine condition argues more for adomestic piece, perhaps either made, or reserved for special occasions. Ellyhas sold several others that were early to mid-19th century, andthey can also be of German origin (but this was bought locally, in the LimousinRegion of Central France). We are frequently offered collections of early French metalwork& other pieces, and buy in quantity, which results in Elly being able tooffer period antiques at prices that are comparable to, or lower than Frenchwholesale levels, including religious antiques – at least 10 crucifixes havearrived in the past two months. This is a fine & rare French treen pricket candlestick, clearly made entirely of beech, retaining its original finish, and most exceptionally, has survived withoutany insect damage. French bugs are voracious, and particularly fond of oak, walnut, and other fruit-woods. Both the base and the drip pan are substantiallyout-of-round due to shrinkage; this, plus the age-related (very minor)splitting to the shaft and base, and the combination of patination and formlead me to believe that this dates from around 1860 – it could be slightlyearlier or later. We are independently listed with the NewEngland Appraisers Association, for France or England.Condition: truly outstanding, as-seen, & as described. This has no repairs – it is original, complete and intact. Note: Photos are high resolution – usemagnification for viewing details. Please ask, if you wish more.© R.
