Platter, 18.75 by 14.65 inches. This pattern is referenced under different names; in CoyshHenrywood1982, pp. 56 and 149, as "Martoviele" though the exact location was not then known, and as "Martoreile" on the mark as seen here. The latter may be an archaic form of the name Martorell, a town in Catalonia in Spain not far from Barcelona, where this bridge, known as t...he "Puente del Diablo" or "Devil's Bridge", spans the river Llobregat. Built in 1283 on the foundations of an earlier Roman bridge, it features a small chapel in the center and a Roman triumphal arch at its eastern abutment. Though the origin of its name is not exactly known, there are a few dozen Devil's Bridges in Europe, all based on folklore claiming they were either built by the devil, with the aid of the devil, or in spite of him.
