Je suis CharlieEn memoriam à noscollègues les artistes, journalistes et rédacteurs ; 7 janvier 2015 Nous sommes ParisiensEn memoriam ; 13novembre 2015 If theremaining colors and graphics on this very rare candle mold look familiar toAmericans, it’s because they are similar to those used by Shaker agent A.J. White, in his 1885 to 1887 almanacs.Few people are aware that the Shakers began filling major orders of herbs, extract & preparations to London & Paris, at least as early as 1850 –by the 1880’s, Shaker “fancy” goods & other Shaker commercial productswere sold extensively in France. At the end of WWI, the Mt. Lebanon ShakerCommunity sent entire relief containers of Shaker goods to both France andBelgium, partly due to their commercial relationship with a French pharmacist (executedby Germans in 1916) and his Belgian son-in-law.I veryactively collect Shaker-related material, as to their international medicinalcommerce - I own the largest collection outside the US – my book on the subjectwill be coming out in the next year. If not for the stenciling, I would havedated this sheet iron candle mold as probably being 50 years earlier, butgraphics design in the 19th century evolved rapidly – the combinationof typography, design & color are pretty specific to the mid to late 1880’s.Sadly, this has been overly-cleaned along the soldered seams, which has effacedmuch of the stenciling – quite a bit is still visible, but not enough for meto make sense of.I’ve been living in France for 25+years, and have seen at least 8 stamped Mt. Lebanon Shaker chairs, but don’t recallever seeing a candle mold of this type, regardless of origin. It might wellbe French, and from a company that was only in existence for a brief time –I only mention the Shakers, due to the graphics. It turned up very locally, less than 20 miles from my house – but so has a stamped number # 7 Mt. Lebanonrocker, with its original tape seat & back.Condition – strictlyas described and as-seen, but intact, with no repairs or replacements – theedges of the base are very slightly bent. If not for the paint, I would havewiped this down with diluted linseed oil, but don’t want to take a chance on damagingthe surface of a rare survivor, regardless of its origin. From France, the postalsystem is fast, efficient, flexible, & based on weight; rates haverecently changed, but generally remain less than those of the UK, for smallerparcels. Up to 2 kilos to NorthAmerica costs 36 Euros; up to 5 kilos to North America costs 53 Euros;up to 10 kilos is 100 Euros, & 20 kilos is 160 Euros – plus 1 Euro per 150 Euros insurancecoverage, to a maximum of 1, 500 Euros. Buyers can lower costs on grouped purchases, depending on thesize of the parcel, & insurance coverage - several pieces in one parcelare usually less expensive, as to per-item shipping cost – but do ask first! From the UK - Royal Mail can only be used for internationalparcels under 2kilos; measuring less than 90 centimeters total, and with a maximum insurance value of £200 (a recent, &exceedingly dumb decision): FedEx shipping is largelyvolumetric – the cost of sending a 5-kilo parcel is only marginally higher than1 or 2 kilos – 5 kilos toNorth America can be as little as £50 - versus £28 to £32 for 1 kilo – depending on the size of the parcel, & insurance coverage. Buyers can usually lower shippingcosts on grouped purchases – but again, please ask first. Payments:PayPal, French or UK checks, or bank drafts, & all banktransfers accepted.
