Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. Worked by an anonymous hand, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of small to medium sized alphabet letters and numbers underlined with various border patterns. The lower section of the linen is stitched with three rows of larger lettering with a c...rown and the number 3 at the end of the last row. There are seven crowns stitched across the bottom edge of the linen, each with a letter beneath to denote their rank. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with a few faint marks and darker down the middle. There is also the outline of a K next to the K beneath the king's crown where it looks as though the stitching has been removed at some point of time. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. Measures 12" across x 12 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
