Late 19th century sampler by F.Deacon. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1880 or slightly later, Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with spot motifs at the end of the fourth and final rows and finishing with F.Deacon's name running across the bottom edge. The whole piece is then surrounded by ...a narrow red border. The gauze has minor overall discolouration with a small dark mark inside the Q on the third row. Some shades of the wool have mellowed more than others over the years but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows some remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 11" across x 12" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
