Here we have a really large and beautiful 19th century (1870 ish) Italian faience/tin glazed Cantagalli pottery centerpiece or fruit bowl. Ulisse Cantagalli (1839-1901) was a pottery producer in Florence Italy and produced copies of 14th -16th century Italian majolica and European and middle Eastern pot...tery: ceramics, tin-glazed earthenwares in the Iznik pottery style of the Ottoman Empire. The base is beautifully formed by dolphins heads and cherub or a young satyr, on front and above them, a two section trefoil basket like bowl for fruit. It is topped with a finial and a bow/ ribbon and raised berries cascading down on 4 sides. The exterior shows raised tendrils holding what seems like the expanding double trefoil "baskets". There are also painted butterflies and flowers and the exterior ends painted winged cherubs with dragonflies and foliate. There is a hole at the top of the finial and not quite sure if this is to hold a candle I assume as there is some wax residue inside. The piece is in very good condition, with quite a few minor glaze flakes and and minor chips, as old tin glazed items tend to do since this is low fired clay. Add to the fact that this is about 150 years old and I'm surprised it is in such good condition and not in a museum. The bottom is marked with the Cantagalli cockerel and the number 25 which is a number assigned to one of the many decorators at the Cantagalli factory. It measures about 12 5/8" tall X 17" long and about 10.25" wide and it is quite heavy at 11.5 lbs!Items I sell are not new. They have been used so do not expect mint condition unless otherwise noted.
