GREAT Original Early 19th Century Forged Iron New England Antique American Whaling Harpoon A nice example of an antique whaling harpoon dating from the first quarter of the 19th century, circa 1830-50.As you can see this is a toggle head example, formed to accomodate an iron cotter stlye pin. Similar examples can be seen in numerous volumes on the subject of whaling and the industry behind it. All blacksmith made, hand forged out of high quality iron. From age there is some minor pitting fr...om age to the surface. Overall though this is a very good/very good+ example. Measures an impressive 33" in overall length, with the blade being 8" in length.A wonderful original example of early American, New England whaling harpoon, certain to be a great addition to any maritime or whaling related collection. This was Purchased out of a Dedham Mass. Estate sale years ago with notations stating it was bought from a Nantucket estate along side some blubber spades and other harpoons.
