MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE AND MOTIF SAMPLER BY AMY BEZZEY? - C. 1860

Mid 19th century sampler by Amy Bezzey? I've put a question mark after Amy's surname as there is a small amount of stitch loss to the third letter. It certainly looks like Bezzey but Amy may have reversed S's which would make her surname Bessey. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1860. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower ...basket with two floral motifs on each side. There is a bush and trio of birds to the left of the central basket with a dog and diamond above, and a flower basket to the right with a flower and dog above. The middle and lower sections of the gauze are stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a floral motif to their side flanked by a small tree at the bottom and a flower basket over each of its topmost bloom. There is a rose basket to the left of the upper foliage of the Tree of Knowledge and a carnation basket to the right. Amy's name is stitched in red in each of the lower corners of the gauze then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss and some very slight bleeding to certain shades. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Amy first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some minor damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 12 1/2" x 16"
