Early/mid 19th century sampler by E.Milward. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. Worked in silk on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central-ish crown with a lion and unicorn standing on either side, a flower basket by the unicorn and a fruit basket and bird by the side of the lion. There is a bird standing beneath the lion... and unicorn with a flower to his left and right, a small flower basket by the flower on the left side. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with an impressive carnation and honeysuckle urn which has a row of three hearts on the urn itself and a bird standing beneath each honeysuckle bloom. There is a charming two storey house to the left of the urn with a bird perched on one of the chimneys whilst the right side is stitched with floral motifs. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a large flower at their side, plus Adam has what looks like a fox standing next to him. E. Milward's name below his paws (a bit tricky to read) whilst her work is stitched beneath the flower next to Eve. There is tree motif and small floral motif on the left side of the Tree of Knowledge's foliage and an exotic bird on a blossom branch on the right. The top edge of the linen is stitched with a deep carnation border whilst the other three sides are stitched with a zigzag border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark, and the colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage on the upper right side of the gauze which also has a split next to it - a small split by the last flower on the top edge border and a split over the unicorn. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The photographs also show that the side edges retain remnants of their original edging cloth whilst the top and bottom edges have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some fraying and a small amount of stitch loss to the top of the carnation border.Measures 11 3/4" x 17"WITH THE SPLITS IN THE GAUZE I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT HANDLING OF THE SAMPLER BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM UNTIL IT IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED.
