MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM &EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY LOUISA MEWETT - 1853

Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Louisa Mewett aged 15 - 1853. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque containing the following short verse which has a tree and heart to the left side and a crown and strawberry to the right

There is a Tree of Knowledge in the form of a...n oak to the left and right of the verse, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches which have two crowns above. This section of stitch work is then underlined with a deep arcaded floral border. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree which has a crown above flanked by a standing bird each with a stag at their side. The stags then have a fruit basket, bird and bird standing on a basket by their side. The lower part of the fruit tree has a windmill to the left and right followed by a dog, heart and tall floral motif, the latter with a chicken and bird to its side. There is a flower basket beneath the central fruit tree which has a carnation and two flower baskets to each side of its upper section and a tiny fruit bowl and butterfly to each side of its lower section, The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque containing Louisa's details and the date of June 1853. There is a flower basket on top of the plaque with a bird, dog, floral motif and tiny bird on a leaf to each side. The outer floral motifs have a flower basket above them with a spray of flowers and a tiny dog to their side, whilst each bird on a leaf has a fruit basket and flower basket nearby. There is a flower basket, floral motifs and birds to the left and right of the plaque then the whole piece is surrounded by a zigzagged floral border.The linen has overall, quite dark discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip, possibly its original. The frame has an area of old veneer loss to the lower right corner and a couple of much smaller ones elsewhere. It also has some scratches and scuff mark commensurate with its age.Measures 13" x 13" (sight size) and 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" including the frame.
