Maker: Believed to date to the 1950s, this lovely pair of jumbo or breakfast cups and saucers is by the renowned Italian ceramics firm Cantagalli.
Cantagalli has produced superb and highly coveted ceramics since 1494 and this set is no exception. Its quality is apparent: it is beautifully hand painted and each piece feels substantial in the hand.
Design: The scalloped pattern features stylized pink and blue flowers and tiny green leaves, trimmed in dark pink. All the pieces are i...n the same pattern, though there are minor variations in how it is executed.
Marks: This Cantagalli set is in the same pattern as another set that was sold separately. The classic Cantagalli rooster mark appears on many of those pieces but not on the pieces in this set. These cups and saucers are unmarked; one saucer has the original Cantagalli label attached.
Size: The cups are 4 1/2 inches wide at the opening and 3 inches tall. The saucers are 7 1/4 inches wide. Together they weigh 2 pounds 5 ounces.
Condition: All 4 pieces are in excellent condition with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, repairs or stains.
The set has the tiny imperfections that make handmade Italian ceramics so distinctive and utterly charming, including air bubbles, pinpricks and uneven paint. The shapes and sizes are also slightly uneven.
