Antique handwritten store ledger from Newbury, Massachusetts, approx. 6-1/4" x 7-5/8", with over 200 pages of entries beginning in May, 1860, and ending in 1874, with the most pages dating from the 1860's, from a general store listing the sales of various items of groceries, small articles, etc. (including various groceries, coffee, tea, molasses, flour, meal, apples, soap, lard, tobacco, matches, candles, saleratus, fish, and dozens of other items), sold to dozens of named people..., as well as items sold to the Town of Newbury and delivered to various people who were being supported by the Town, along with the prices.A wonderful window into the business of a New England general store during the Civil War era, and great for research into the various named customers. (some of the names are Eben P. Ferguson, Mial M. Rogers, Benjamin Pearson, Ira S. Tilton, Mrs. D.N. Ferguson, J.C. Peabody, Amos Poor, and dozens of others).The writer drew an "x" across the page when the account was settled, to indicate that it was paid.Hardbound, with marbled outer boards.
