Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is an outstanding find of a rare mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 95 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. It's not marked as to maker or point of origin since that was not an international requirement until 1920. ...But it looks much like a very early design of Hubert Herr though like I said, it is not marked as such. The clock is deeply hand carved, beautifully detailed, and is one of the oldest clock case styles that dates clear back to 1930 when Hubert first produced this concept but with a different movement, a bird on an actual nest, and a different upper frame. No one has duplicated the quality since though many have tried. It is designed to look very much like an intricately carved grape vine and features six, intricately carved, large wooden grape leaves on the front, some unique branches at the bottom of the case, and a hand carved wooden bird with the modest beginnings of a nest at the bottom. And atop the clock is a larger rustic bird perched in the fancy branches looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the trim and carvings are deep and wavy and have a gorgeous dark mahogany finish! It is a most impressive clock and an impressive size too measuring about 18" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 14" or so at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The hour numbers are the old style and are nailed to the dial, not glued on. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case and each is secured with a metal latch. The doors open easily to allow for any adjustments that may be needed from that angle. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, early rack-style weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small door above the wooden dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The wooden bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and found some nicely-done old repairs on the lower frame. I noticed too that some of the leaves have chipped over the years but nothing unsightly or detracting...I doubt if anything could. The clock shows beautifully and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, antique mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
