Antique Silver Needlework Compendium/ Thimble Germany * Circa 1770-80 This rare silver compendium is almost 250 years old. It's solid silver (tests 850/1000 pure) and is heavy and solid for its size (weighs 27.1 grams). It has no marks, but they seldom do. It stands upright on a seal base that has not been engraved. Kay Sullivan shows several examples of silver compendiums in this style on pp. 15-17 of her book Needlework Tools & Accessories - A Dutch Tradition. She says they w...ere probably made in Germany and imported into the Netherlands. This one is smaller than some and unscrews into 3 pieces. At the top the thimble unscrews from where it covers two little bobbins. Below that is a needle case and then the seal. The sides are engraved with wave like designs. The thimble is about an American size 8 (15 mm diameter opening). The condition is excellent with no holes or dents and everything screws together perfectly. It measures 3" tall.
