But I would not have you to be ignorant brethrenConcerning them which are asleepThat ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hopeFor if we believe that Jesus dies and rose againEven so in them also which sleep in JesusWill God bring w...ith himFor this we say unto you by the word of the LordThat we which are alive and remain untoThe coming of the LordShall not prevent them which are asleep
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a row of three fruit baskets contained by two undulating borders, the lower one with Harriet's name and the date of June 20th 1837 beneath. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep carnation border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places. As can be seen from the photographs, there are some small areas of damage to the field of the linen and more extensive damage around the edges, that in the top right corner having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. The sampler has been stitched onto a backing cloth at some point of time to keep it stable so I'm not able to see the reverse. But the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some slight bleeding to areas of the green stitch work.Measures 13" x 17" to the edges of the border stitch work.
