A strong mahogany 1/2 plate camera 'Optimus' by Perken Son & Rayment circa 1890 to 1899. From 1900 the name became Perken & Son. This is a robust , strongly constructed Hand & Stand design with early dovetail joints. The trade name 'Optimus' is impressed beneath the lens panel and on the leather carry handle , it is also engraved on the brass lens , - 'Perken Son & Rayment, Hatton Garden, London, Rapid Euryscope 7 x 5 Optimus. It is an early 'Waterhouse' type lens ...with three 'Waterhouse' stops, - F 11, 16 & 30. The original bellows were replaced some time in the past probably in the 1940 - 50 period with a synthetic fully light tight set which have the surface texture and look of the original leather. The original lens is in good condition but for the dents and splits to the front rim, as shown, however the optics are not affected and are good and clear.
