First Edition, very scarce, complete in 2 vols. leather bound, each with a beautiful fore-edge painting: ANNALS OF THE CALEDONIANS, PICTS, AND SCOTS, AND OF STRATHCLYDE, CUMBERLAND, GOLLOWAY, AND MURRAY. An early history of Scotland and its people with extensive introductions and commentaries, and an Appendix with a chronological list of Scottish Kings. Many chapters in orig...inal Latin with English translations following. Full red calf, spine with 5 bars, compartments with gilt design, author, title, and The H. H. Baxter Memorial Library in gilt at its lower edge. Fore-edge paintings on both volumes: Vol 1, a beautifully done "Highland Scene" with a Scottish Highland cow in the foreground; Vol 2, a charming view of a field with farm houses, church (?), stacks of hay, and mountains in the background. Vol. 1: 262 pp. with wide, gilt decorated turnins with beautifully marbled and heavy double endpapers at both ends of the volume. Vol. 2: 341 pp. with same endpapers but not double. The books, binding and text in excellent condition, very clean, with no reference to a library other than the gilt name on the spine. 7 1/2 x 5 x 2 1/2 in.
